How long should I leave conditioner in?

Longer than most people do. Lait Vital, Fondant Cica Chroma, Genesis Fondant, Fondant Densité and Ciment Anti-Usure need two to three minutes. Première Fondant, Cicaflash, Insta Glaze and the Curl Manifesto Fondant need three to five. Squeeze the water out first. On very wet hair a light conditioner slides straight off, and people end up using double the amount, which is what weighs fine hair down.

Should conditioner go on my roots?

Usually not. Work it through the mid-lengths and ends, where hair is driest and most porous. Genesis Fondant is applied avoiding the roots, and if your hair is fine or your roots get oily quickly, keep any conditioner off the scalp. You get lift at the top and care where the hair needs it.

Conditioner or mask: do I need both?

For most hair, use conditioner on most wash days and swap in a mask once or twice a week. Thick hair is the exception: Genesis Masque Reconstituant can replace conditioner, and Kérastase suggests Curl Manifesto Masque Beurre instead of conditioner for very curly and coily hair. Are there leave-in conditioners here?

Yes, two. Nutritive Nectar Thermique, $54 (RRP $72), is a leave-in blow-dry cream for dry, medium to thick hair that protects up to 230°C. Curl Manifesto Crème de Jour Fondamentale, $57.75 (RRP $77), is a leave-in for all curl types that controls frizz and defines curls. Both go on towel-dried hair and stay in.
