Kérastase Genesis vs Densifique: Which Suits Your Hair?

By Amelia Aitkin-Deane · October 30, 2026

Kérastase Densifique shampoo and conditioner beside Genesis shampoo and serum

Quick answer: choose Kérastase Genesis if your hair is weak and you are noticing more strands coming out from breakage when you brush or wash. Choose Densifique if your hair is fine or thinning and has lost its fullness, but you are not seeing extra fall. Neither is a treatment for medical hair loss. If hair is coming out suddenly or in patches, see your GP first.

When should I choose Genesis?

Kérastase Genesis Serum Anti-Chute Fortifiant

Choose Genesis when the main thing you notice is hair coming out. Kérastase made it for weakened hair prone to falling due to breakage, so it suits hair that has become fragile and snaps or sheds on the brush. The daily leave-in serum is the hero of the range.

Pick Bain Hydra-Fortifiant for finer hair and oilier scalps, or Bain Nutri-Fortifiant for thicker, drier hair. Our Genesis hair fall guide goes into more detail.

Shop Genesis Serum, $76.50 (RRP $102)

When should I choose Densifique?

Kérastase Densifique Bain Densité shampoo

Choose Densifique when your hair simply looks finer or flatter than it used to. It strengthens each strand and builds texture and body, so hair looks and feels fuller after each wash.

It suits fine hair that collapses under richer products. Fondant Densité is light enough not to flatten it, and the shampoo also comes in a larger 500ml bottle and refill.

Which is better for thinning hair?

It depends on what thinning means for you. If your hair is falling more than usual because it is weak and breaking, start with Genesis. If it has gradually lost density and looks sparse, Densifique is the better fit. A stylist can look at your hair in person and tell you which is closest, although a stylist cannot diagnose hair loss. That part is for your GP.

Can I use Genesis and Densifique together?

We could not find clear guidance from Kérastase on mixing the two, so here is our practical advice. Choose one routine and stick with it for at least six weeks, so you can tell whether it is helping. If you are torn, book in and ask us.

What about men?

Kérastase Genesis Homme Sérum Fortifiant Anti-Chute

Genesis Homme is the men's version of Genesis, for weakened hair prone to thinning and hair fall due to breakage. The range includes Bain de Masse Épaississant ($48) and Cire d'Épaisseur Texturisante ($48).

Shop Genesis Homme Sérum, $76.50 (RRP $102)

When to see a GP instead

Shampoo and serum can look after the hair you have, but they do not treat medical causes of hair loss. Healthdirect suggests seeing a doctor if you are losing much more hair than usual or it is coming out in clumps. We would also see a GP for bald patches or a red, sore or scaly scalp. Read healthdirect's guide to hair loss.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Kérastase Genesis and Densifique?

Genesis is for weakened hair prone to falling due to breakage. Densifique is for fine or thinning hair that has lost density and body.

Which is better for hair fall, Genesis or Densifique?

Genesis. It is the range Kérastase made for hair fall due to breakage, and it includes a daily scalp serum.

Which is better for fine hair?

Densifique, if your concern is fullness and body. If fine hair is also breaking and falling, Genesis Bain Hydra-Fortifiant is made for finer hair too.

Does Genesis or Densifique regrow hair?

We would not expect either to regrow hair, and we would not buy them for that. They are hair care products that strengthen hair and help it look and feel better. If you are concerned about hair loss, speak to your GP.

How long until I see results?

Kérastase directs the Genesis serum to be used daily over six weeks, so give any new routine at least that long. Densifique shampoo and conditioner can make hair feel fuller from the first wash.
