Quick answer: a toner corrects the tone of lightened hair, usually by cancelling yellow or orange. A gloss adds shine and refreshes the colour on any hair, lightened or not. If your blonde has gone brassy, you want a toner. If the shade is right but it looks dull, you want a gloss. At our salons either one starts from $60 on short hair, from $70 on medium and from $80 on long.

What is the difference between a gloss and a toner?
A toner is a correction. Lightening takes pigment out of the hair and leaves the warmth underneath, which shows up as yellow or orange. A toner lays a sheer colour over that warmth to neutralise it: violet cancels yellow and blue cancels orange. That is how a pale yellow turns into a soft beige or a cool ash.
A gloss is a finish. It is a semi-permanent treatment that adds shine and refreshes the tone you already have. It can be clear or tinted, and you do not need to have been lightened to have one.
The line between them is blurry. Salons use the words loosely and one formula can do both jobs, which is why we price them as one service and why The Blonde Edit includes a "custom gloss toner". Ask what it will do to your hair, not what it is called.
| Toner | Gloss | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Corrects unwanted warmth | Adds shine and refreshes tone |
| Best for | Blonde, highlights, balayage | Any colour, including brunette |
| Will it lighten hair? | No | No |
| Will it cover grey? | No | No, though a tinted gloss can soften it |
| Usual refresh | Every 4 to 6 weeks | Every 6 to 8 weeks on brunette |
| From | $60 short, $70 medium, $80 long | $60 short, $70 medium, $80 long |
Which one do I need?
- Your blonde has turned yellow or orange: toner.
- You have just had foils: usually a toner, because foils lift the hair and the toner sets the final shade.
- Your brunette looks flat: a tinted gloss.
- The colour is right but the shine has gone: a gloss, clear or tinted.
- You have an event coming up: a gloss.
- You want to go lighter: neither. You need lightening first, so read foils vs balayage.
- You want grey gone: neither. See our colour services for coverage and blending.
Can a toner fix orange hair?
Only up to a point. A toner works with the colour underneath it and cannot lift hair any lighter. If your hair has been lightened to a strong orange, a toner can calm it down, but it will not take it to a pale blonde. That usually means more lightening first, which is common when going from dark to blonde.
How much does a gloss or toner cost?
It is priced by length, from $60 short, $70 medium and $80 long. See every option on our services and prices page.
Toner is often an extra line on the bill. Classic foils may need toning on top, so a full head on medium hair is from $239, plus toner from $70, so from $309 all up. Our hair colour cost guide has more examples.
How do I make a gloss or toner last?
A gloss fades gradually over four to six weeks, and sun, water and time all break down toner. On the Gold Coast you can expect the sun, salt water and pool chlorine to speed that up, so a few habits are worth keeping:
- Wash in lukewarm water and use a shampoo made for coloured hair.
- If you are a cool blonde, use a purple shampoo such as Blond Absolu Bain Ultra-Violet once a week. More than that can leave hair dull.
- Wet your hair with fresh water before you swim and rinse it straight after. Wear a hat in strong sun. Our summer blonde guide has more on this.
- For brunettes and other coloured hair, Chroma Absolu Soin Acide Chroma Gloss helps with shine at home. It will not shift your tone the way a salon gloss does.
Frequently asked questions
Is a hair gloss the same as a toner?
Not quite. A toner corrects unwanted warmth in lightened hair, while a gloss adds shine and refreshes tone on any hair. The same type of product can do both, so salons often treat them as one service.
How long does a toner last?
Plan on a refresh every 4 to 6 weeks if you are blonde. Sun, water and washing all wear it down, so it can fade sooner if you swim often.
Does a gloss or toner damage hair?
Neither one lightens your hair, so they are far gentler than bleach. Some formulas use a low-strength developer, so tell your colourist if your hair already feels fragile.
Do I need a toner after foils?
Usually, yes. Foils lift the hair and the toner sets the final shade, which is why most blondes add one. At our salons a toner starts from $60 on short hair.
Can purple shampoo replace a toner?
No. Purple shampoo tops up a cool tone for a short while between visits. It is much weaker than a salon toner and cannot correct strong orange.
