Quick answer: choose foils for brighter, more even blonde from the root. Choose balayage for a softer, lived-in look that grows out gently. At our salons a full head of classic foils starts from $199, usually with a toner from $60, and you would come back every 6 to 8 weeks. Our balayage package, The Blonde & Beyond, starts from $770, with visits every 3 to 4 months.

What is the difference between foils and balayage?
With foils, your colourist weaves or slices out fine sections, applies lightener from close to the root and wraps each one. The foil keeps the product working, so you get more lift and a very even result.
Balayage comes from the French word for sweeping. The lightener is painted on by hand, normally starting away from the root and getting brighter towards the ends. Your natural root stays in place, so there is no hard line when it grows. Our balayage guide goes into more detail.
| Foils | Balayage | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Bright, even, defined | Soft, blended, lived-in |
| Grow-out | A visible regrowth line | Soft, no hard line |
| Typical visit | Every 6 to 8 weeks | Every 3 to 4 months |
| Good for | Maximum brightness, blending grey | Fewer visits, natural-looking dimension |
| From | Full head $199, micro foils $275 | The Blonde & Beyond package $770 |
Which is better for my hair?
- You want to be properly blonde, roots included: foils.
- You want to look sun-lightened and can leave your root alone: balayage.
- You want fewer trips to the salon: balayage.
- You have some grey: fine foils blend it well. Balayage alone will not cover grey at the root, so see our grey hair colour page.
- You have dark hair and want a big change: either can work, but it may take more than one session. Read going from dark to blonde.
- You like both: ask about a root shadow. It softens the line on foils, and on The Blonde Edit it is an add-on from $30.
How much do foils and balayage cost?
These are our "from" prices. Length and density both change the price, and your final quote comes at the consultation.
| Service | Short | Medium | Long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic foils, half head | From $166 | From $201 | From $219 |
| Classic foils, full head | From $199 | From $239 | From $247 |
| Micro foils, full head | Not listed | From $275 | From $315 |
| Toner or gloss | From $60 | From $70 | From $80 |
| The Blonde Edit (foils package) | Not listed | From $508 | From $649 |
The Blonde & Beyond starts from $770 and takes about 5.5 hours. That figure is not a fair match against foils from $199, because it is a whole package: balayage, a root tap or shadow, toning, a basin tip-out, the Innoluxe Bond Building System, a Kérastase shine treatment and a blow-dry. The closer comparison is The Blonde Edit, which adds a gloss toner, bond building and a blow-dry to full-head foils. Balayage outside the package, including brunette balayage, is quoted at your consultation. Full details are on our services page and in our colour cost guide.
Which costs more over a year?
Balayage means fewer trips, but not automatically a smaller bill. Using our "from" prices on medium hair, a full head of classic foils and a toner is from $309. Every 8 weeks that is about 6.5 visits, or roughly $2,000 a year. The Blonde & Beyond every 4 months is 3 visits, or $2,310, though not every return visit has to be the full package. Ask your colourist to map out your year.
What upkeep do foils and balayage need?
With foils, plan on regrowth visits every 6 to 8 weeks. Our foil prices cover up to 12 weeks of regrowth, and beyond that extra time and product may apply. With balayage, the root can wait 3 to 4 months, but tone fades on its own schedule, so many blondes book a toner or gloss in between, every 4 to 6 weeks.
Either way, this is lightened hair living in Gold Coast sun, salt and chlorine. Use Blond Absolu Blonde Guard as a leave-in before you head out, and Blond Absolu Bain Ultra-Violet once a week if you want to stay cool-toned.
Frequently asked questions
Is balayage cheaper than foils?
Not per visit. Full head foils start from $199 and The Blonde & Beyond balayage package starts from $770, though the package includes much more. You do visit less often with balayage, every 3 to 4 months rather than every 6 to 8 weeks.
Does balayage last longer than foils?
The grow-out does, because there is no hard regrowth line. The tone still fades at about the same rate, so a toner or gloss between visits helps with both.
Which is less damaging, foils or balayage?
Both use lightener, so neither is free of risk. What matters more is your starting condition, how much lift you need and whether bond building is used. An Olaplex bond builder can be added to colour from $55.
Can you do balayage on dark hair?
Yes. The darker your starting colour and the lighter your goal, the more work it takes, so it may take more than one session. Caramel and mocha tones are a good place to start on brunettes.
